Up until a few years ago, the only way to see how much water or heat you consumed was to let a stranger into your home. But this is outdated and inconvenient, placing unnecessary time demands on the user as he waits for the meter reader’s visit.
This is why meters with radio communication are being installed today, allowing remote readings and consumption monitoring in real time. European legislation expects this solution to become standard in the future. Experts also expect further development of this technology and its connection to the Internet of Things.
The most common solution in the Czech Republic are meter reading visits, where the meter reader uses a modem and terminal to read either the meter in the common areas of the house or outside the building. However, so-called nodes connected to the Internet can also be added to this system. In this case, the data are collected continuously and can be monitored online, allowing the user to control his consumption by comparing it with previous periods. This enables him to respond to various fluctuations in consumption and therefore save more than if he only receives the final annual bill.
